L-Ergothioneine is an imidazole-2-thione derivative of histidine betaine. It is synthesized by certain bacteria and fungi. It is transported into the mitochondria, an essential “energy factory” of life activities, through the transporter protein OCTN1 on the cell membrane and mitochondrial membrane. It plays an antioxidant role, inhibits DNA damage, effectively protects against ultraviolet damage, protects cells, and prevents photodamage. At the same time, it has the ability to eliminate free radicals, reduce lipid peroxidation, and promote the body’s own antioxidant enzymes. Among various antioxidants, melatonin is particularly unique because it can chelate heavy metal ions, protecting red blood cells in the body from free radical damage.
